A daring decision

Picture
It's always a bold move to remake something that is loved by so many.  Look at all the failed TV and film remakes that have gone wrong in the past.  In my experience, TV and movie fans are a lot more forgiving than gamers and when it comes to our beloved classics, we can become very protective of our memories.

When I originally played Monkey Island - all those years ago - it took weeks of problem solving, scribbling down notes, and figuring out just what was the point in swiping that metal pot.  If my memories were tarnished by some half-assed remake, I'd have felt ... very disappointed ... to say the least.

Anything can look good in HD?

Picture
But here it is, we dipped our toes back into the monkey-urine filled oceans of Melee Island and found ... that it's good - real good - to be back.

The graphics, all repainted and looking stunning in HD resolutions, really capture the setting of both Melee and Monkey Island itself.  The new look of the characters, for the most part, is all good, with the exception of Guybrushs' hair that seems to annoyed many fans of the series.

Sounds like ... Monkeys?

Picture
The music has all been remastered and new soundtrack is very pleasing to the ears but best-of-all in my opinion, is the new voice-acting, featuring the voice-actors from Curse of Monkey Island.

For the first time ever we can hear the voice of the old shop-keeper telling us to keep of hands of his stock while we think about how we can pinch that lovely looking sword of his.

Catering for all needs?

Picture

In case you feel the need to remember the good ol' days, Lucasarts have even added a feature to let you flick back to the original game and a press of a button, just so you can see what an improvement has been made.  No voice-acting when you view the old game though, which is a bit annoying.

This is also the first time the Monkey Island series has appeared on the Xbox 360 and iPhone as well as Steam, so heres hoping it will be a big enough success to release on other formats too.
